Pondering the Principles of ProverbsNew International Version
Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. New Living Translation Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich. English Standard Version A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. New American Standard Bible Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich. King James Bible He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. Holman Christian Standard Bible Idle hands make one poor, but diligent hands bring riches. (Proverbs 10:4) Pondering the Principles of ProverbsMost everyone recognizes this classic representation of "Good vs. Evil."
The Joker, Batman's arch-villain, mocks and opposes all things good. He is generally regarded as a homicidal maniac, and although he has had many chances to end the Joker's existence, Batman has repeatedly failed to do so. Therefore, the struggle of good and evil continues in Gotham City. The Joker, and his persistent desire to establish anarchy as a way of life within the fictional Gotham City, represent something more than just the struggle of good and evil. Pondering the Principles of Proverbs Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise, Which, having no chief, officer or ruler, Prepares her food in the summer And gathers her provision in the harvest. How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest”-- Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man. (Pro. 6:6-11) Pondering the Principles of ProverbsIf you have put up security for a friend’s debt
or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger-- if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said-- follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased. Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do. Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net. (Pro. 6:1-5) In this day and age of high prices and our desire for “high-ticket” items, this section may seem a little antiquated. Let's see, however, if there is not some modern-day wisdom that can be gleaned from this. The writer is obviously speaking about co-signing for a loan, and he writes that if we have already done that, then do everything possible to get out of it. Get out NOW! Pondering the Principles of Proverbs THE GUARD FELL ASLEEP ON DUTY “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Pro. 4:23 NLT)
In Part 1 we learned that your heart determines your life, which basically means that YOU determine your life. I say that, because it is up to you to guard your heart. If you guard it, you have control. If you do not guard it, you do not have control over your life, but are at the effect of anything and every thing that comes along. Pondering the Principles of Proverbs “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Pro. 4:23 NLT)
I heard Billy Graham say, in effect, “I looked over the newspaper this morning and read about murders, rapes, robberies, adulteries, embezzlements and other problems in this city, and I wasn't bothered. “And that bothers me.” Pondering the Principles of Proverbs The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
(Pro. 4:7 NAS) The beauty of wisdom lies in its simplicity. We so often overlook the obvious, but this proverb shows us that it is helpful to state the obvious: The beginning of wisdom is to get it. Pondering the Principles of Proverbs Surely most people would agree that wisdom is its own reward. However, there are promises of provision attached to the acquisition of wisdom.
Stop and think about it, and the truth of that statement will be self-evident. Consider it from the opposite side—stupid kills. Pondering the Principles of Proverbs Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:” (Proverbs 1:20-21)
Wisdom is not something for a select few. It is not the singular domain of gurus. It does not belong only to the formally educated. It is not limited to the aged or only to those who have graduated from “Knocks College.” One wit has stated that wisdom comes from experience and experience is just a series of bad judgments. |
