Pondering the Principles of Proverbs
Of course, it is mainly associated with the occult and black magic.
As a Christian, we view the all-seeing eye as a reference to God, who sees all things, and knows all things.
However, there is a proverb for our consideration that takes us to a different thematic level.
The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both. (Pro. 20:12)
The natural interpretation of this verse for all creationists is that God made the ear and the eye. No problem with that.
The problem is that most folks will stop with that and not take it on to its deeper meaning and application.
The proverb states that God made the ear that hears and the eye that sees. Jesus let us know that those two faculties have much more to do than simply recognizing and recording sensory input.
Matt. 13:11 "And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given."
Matt. 13:16 "But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear."
Obviously, this is about more than sound waves touching the ear drum, or light waves touching the eyeball.
There are many who will take the verses in between these to prove that it is man's responsibility to hear and to see, but this does not fit what Jesus said, nor the proverb under consideration.
Simply stated, it is up to God to grant anyone the ability to understand.
I am well aware that this flies in the face of our man-exalting, humanistic, free-will-elevating, egocentric concepts of our man-made god. I well know the fight that is generated from within to protect our supremacy. I've been there. I've fought the fight. I've read the Bible.
Man, in his self-centeredness, hates anything that does not allow him the right to sit on the throne of rulership over his own life.
Yet this verse, and hundreds more like it, declare the sovereignty of God over His creation in an unequivocal fashion.
If I choose the Lord, then I can pat myself on the back for being so wise. Indeed, that is the attitude of many toward outsiders who have not yet made the decision.
However, if it is the Lord who chooses me, then my face is in the dirt acknowledging His greatness and my unworthiness.
God is God, and above Him there is none else.
