Children get excited when they see all the lights and hear the music of the various rides at an amusement park. The more adventurous among them want to ride everything. It is especially difficult to explain to a five-year-old that they must be a certain height in order to ride one they have chosen. Of course, we try to explain it by saying, "You're not tall enough." "But, I'm big, mommy." "Yes, you're big all right, and very brave, but the sign says you must be THIS tall in order to ride. And you're not that tall yet. Maybe next year."
After watching this video, I am more sure than ever about my distaste for education as it exists today. I developed my distaste over the years as I have pursued my own formal and informal education. I have observed first-hand some of the degradation of children by a system built to reward only a certain few, while punishing the rest.
