THE BIG QUESTION

I have watched with interest the ongoing debate about the rightness or wrongness of Phil Robertson's willingness to answer a question.
Much of the same rhetoric ensued when Dan Cathy, owner of Chik-Fil-A, expressed his beliefs.
Both men, high-profile types in business and entertainment, were asked about their views on homosexuality. Since both men are out-of-the-closet-Christians, their response was predictable. Both were persecuted for holding such views.
Why?

Pondering the Principles of Proverbs

Picture
Of course, we do.
In fact, many of us have probably said at one time or another, "I have a great idea." Nothing wrong with being your own cheerleader, I guess; but I do get a kick out of hearing that particular statement.

Why is this? Why do we automatically assume that our thought processes, or our opinion, or ideas are best?

Thin-skinned people abound.
Imagined insults set them off with no warning.
Simply utter a certain word, and you will not hear the end of the matter.

Pondering the Principles of Proverbs

Picture
Most everyone recognizes this classic representation of "Good vs. Evil."

The Joker, Batman's arch-villain, mocks and opposes all things good. He is generally regarded as a homicidal maniac, and although he has had many chances to end the Joker's existence, Batman has repeatedly failed to do so.

Therefore, the struggle of good and evil continues in Gotham City.

The Joker, and his persistent desire to establish anarchy as a way of life within the fictional Gotham City, represent something more than just the struggle of good and evil.

HOW TO HATE

Pondering the Principles of Proverbs

Picture
I'm sure that many would assume that we need no instruction on how to hate. It seems that hate is all around us. People hate the government. People hate politics. People hate religion. People hate each other. People hate getting cut off in traffic. People hate to wait. People hate the way they look. People hate not having any money.
Hate seems to come easy. It seems to be the way of life in this hour.

What Does a Christian Believe?

I've been watching the intense controversy surrounding this current political season in the United States. People are taking sides in loud and sometimes obnoxious ways. Some people are even losing friends over this election.

There was an oh-so-true cartoon published on FaceBook today that solidified my desire to write this article. The caption read: "Let's argue about politics until we resort to name calling. Then we can move on to religion and finally kill each other."

A couple of weeks ago, the following comment was received by a friend of mine:

The Illusion of Reality

There is much current thought concerning the nature of reality and the world we live in. These ideas are expressed in our movies, and written about in our books, and promoted by our gurus and teachers.
Though Rene Descartes' grappling with the reality of his existence is the usual link to this type of thinking, there is a long history of the concept that reality is only an illusion, dating back to Plato and his man in the cave analogy.
It's current terminology is simulation hypothesis.

The Bible--No Errors?

8/21/2012

Picture
The Bible is a collection of 66 books written by about 40 authors, in three different languages, on three different continents, over approximately 1600 years.  The Bible claims to be inspired and men have also said it is without error (inerrant).  This means that the Bible claims to be from God and that it is without error in everything it addresses.

When applied to sacred writings, inerrancy is the belief that the words are God's true revelations to mankind. An inerrant text is considered infallible, truthful, reliable, totally free of error and absolutely authoritative. Inerrancy is not restricted to moral and religious truth. It is normally applied to all statements of fact in the Bible: "scientific, historical, or geographical."

Hail To The Critic!

4/10/2012

There is much criticism being hurled at the Church today. The critics are found among believer and non-believer alike.
Is this something that should concern us? Should we take any of the accusations or insults to heart? Should we look to see if there is any element of truth to what is said?
