THE BIG QUESTION

I have watched with interest the ongoing debate about the rightness or wrongness of Phil Robertson's willingness to answer a question.
Much of the same rhetoric ensued when Dan Cathy, owner of Chik-Fil-A, expressed his beliefs.
Both men, high-profile types in business and entertainment, were asked about their views on homosexuality. Since both men are out-of-the-closet-Christians, their response was predictable. Both were persecuted for holding such views.
Why?

Pondering the Principles of Proverbs

Picture
Most everyone recognizes this classic representation of "Good vs. Evil."

The Joker, Batman's arch-villain, mocks and opposes all things good. He is generally regarded as a homicidal maniac, and although he has had many chances to end the Joker's existence, Batman has repeatedly failed to do so.

Therefore, the struggle of good and evil continues in Gotham City.

The Joker, and his persistent desire to establish anarchy as a way of life within the fictional Gotham City, represent something more than just the struggle of good and evil.

The REST of The Story, Part 1

Picture
Rest From Work--Van Gogh
REST: 1--that which remains; 2--quiet repose for the restoration of the body

I write this on Christmas Day, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
We say that Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
Saved from what? For what?
We say that Jesus died to save sinners.
Saved from what? For what?
Sadly, for most Christians, their story begins with Hell and ends with Heaven with nothing in between. They are saved from Hell and get to go to Heaven.
Is that all there is?

God Is DEAD

April 8, 1966
The April 8, 1966, cover of Time magazine was the first cover in the magazine's history to feature only type, and no photo.[4] The cover – with the traditional, red border – was all black, with the words "Is God Dead?" in large, red text. The question was a reference to Friedrich Nietzsche's much-quoted postulate "God is dead" (German: "Gott ist tot"),[5] which he first proposed in his 1882 book The Gay Science.

What Does a Christian Believe?

I've been watching the intense controversy surrounding this current political season in the United States. People are taking sides in loud and sometimes obnoxious ways. Some people are even losing friends over this election.

There was an oh-so-true cartoon published on FaceBook today that solidified my desire to write this article. The caption read: "Let's argue about politics until we resort to name calling. Then we can move on to religion and finally kill each other."

A couple of weeks ago, the following comment was received by a friend of mine:

The Illusion of Reality

There is much current thought concerning the nature of reality and the world we live in. These ideas are expressed in our movies, and written about in our books, and promoted by our gurus and teachers.
Though Rene Descartes' grappling with the reality of his existence is the usual link to this type of thinking, there is a long history of the concept that reality is only an illusion, dating back to Plato and his man in the cave analogy.
It's current terminology is simulation hypothesis.

It is the first part of this famous quote that most people recognize.
However, it is the last sentence that should stir our mind.
How is it that consistency could render us useless?

LOVE is All You Need

Do you see the world through the eyes of love?
It has often been said that the "Fruit of the Spirit" listed in Paul's letter to the Galatians is only love. Everything after that--joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control--are simply descriptors of that love.
