The Illusion of Reality

8/30/2012

There is much current thought concerning the nature of reality and the world we live in. These ideas are expressed in our movies, and written about in our books, and promoted by our gurus and teachers.
Though Rene Descartes' grappling with the reality of his existence is the usual link to this type of thinking, there is a long history of the concept that reality is only an illusion, dating back to Plato and his man in the cave analogy.
It's current terminology is simulation hypothesis.

The 12 Stages Of Spiritual & Physical Evolution
Rites Of Passage:
any ritual or ceremony wherein a participant crosses a threshold demarcating a transformation of their state of being.

This particular definition depends on a cultural awareness and preparation for such a thing we call a rite of passage.
However, there are things in our life and U.S. culture that are considered a rite of passage without such formal recognition.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

8/24/2012

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
and looked down one as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
and having perhaps the better claim
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that, the passing there
had worn them really about the same,

Picture
TWO ROADS DIVERGED IN A YELLOW WOOD
And both that morning equally lay
in leaves no feet had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

The Bible--No Errors?

8/21/2012

The Bible is a collection of 66 books written by about 40 authors, in three different languages, on three different continents, over approximately 1600 years.  The Bible claims to be inspired and men have also said it is without error (inerrant).  This means that the Bible claims to be from God and that it is without error in everything it addresses.

When applied to sacred writings, inerrancy is the belief that the words are God's true revelations to mankind. An inerrant text is considered infallible, truthful, reliable, totally free of error and absolutely authoritative. Inerrancy is not restricted to moral and religious truth. It is normally applied to all statements of fact in the Bible: "scientific, historical, or geographical."

Printed on banners and held aloft in the end-zone of football games, stamped on t-shirts and bumper stickers, the ubiquity of "John 3:16" is at an all-time high.
It is the marquee verse for evangelical Christians, the apparent go-to text for persuasion to the Christian ethos.
The interpretation of the verse, however, is fraught with difficulty, depending on the school of soteriology to which one subscribes.

It is the first part of this famous quote that most people recognize.
However, it is the last sentence that should stir our mind.
How is it that consistency could render us useless?

Your awareness meter should be at peak.
In a previous post, I talked about the necessity of effective communication in order to lessen some of the strife in our life.
I mentioned how the inability to listen is a major factor in our communication failures.
This post goes deeper into that problem.

Jesus Was An Anti-Social Rebel

Check for images of Jesus on Google, and the plethora of possibilities is quite pronounced. Each of them, including the photos of actors portraying the Son of Man, is different. There was a certain tendency, however, until modern times, to portray Him as somber and/or soft. Most of the religious imagery until the 20th century falls into this category.
Sadly, our concept of the man is often colored by the images we've seen, rather than by the Book we've read.

You're NOT listening!

I don't think that what you think I said is what I said.
What we have here is a failure to communicate. (Strother Martin in "Cool Hand Luke" 1967)
Communication is a two-way process. That doesn't mean that both parties have to speak. It simply means that there must be a message given and a message received.
EFFECTIVE communication occurs when the message received is the same as the message given.
How often does that fail to occur in your daily experience?

My heart is heavy today.
While many of my readers have no real need to know or understand that, I hope that the lessons I am learning may somehow benefit those who read this all the way through.
I had the joy of visiting with my oldest child yesterday.
